Questions schools ask
Does it sync with Outlook?
Kestrel does not synchronise mailboxes or documents with Outlook or SharePoint, and it reads no mailbox by itself. A member of staff can file an email or a meeting they have open in Outlook to a student's record with the File to Kestrel button, choosing the student and what the item is, and that item and its attachments are the only things from Outlook the record keeps. Where a school connects its Microsoft 365 tenant, a member of staff who turns it on for themselves sees their own lessons, duties and meetings from Kestrel in their Outlook calendar, and an edit made to one of them in Outlook is put back. A wellbeing case meeting reaches the staff asked to it as an Outlook invitation from the school's organiser mailbox, and each person's answer is shown on the case. Each person can also start a calendar feed from the Calendar page, and Outlook or Google subscribes to its address and shows the entries that person sees when signed in, with their titles and times. Email to families goes out through Kestrel's own send path, so each message is on the record with the decision made about each recipient. Documents are kept in Kestrel's document store, each under a retention class, and are not stored in SharePoint. A two-way link would let a system outside the school write into its record. Calls and their transcripts stay in Teams, which a school that uses it keeps using.
